Sleigh Bells. Terminal 5.

The lights at Terminal 5 slowly came on after Sleigh Bells’ high energy encore and the mixture of sweat and alcohol scented the room. Jolted back to reality you immediately want to either rush to coat check or push your way to the exists before they clog with hundreds of fans coming down from a buzz. However, slightly above conversation Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” could be heard with increasing volume almost immediately after Sleigh Bells’ last song of the night. The rush stopped and the crowd erupted as if Sleigh Bells came back for a second encore. T5 became a dance floor of hundreds of people of all ages paying homage to Whitney. Whether or not they ever listened to her music before or it was just the timing and the heat of the moment with the devastating news of her passing still burning in our minds, it serves as a reminder of the power of music. The influence of these iconic musicians cannot be disputed, period. It’s why I’m a part of this business and the easiest way to explain that passion to people is moments like that. Stop, look around you, and just listen. That’s the music industry.

hiphopcassette:

Believe the hype. The overnight success of Alabama Shakes is real. You might have caught them at Brooklyn Bowl this past Thursday night at their sold-out show or maybe you caught them outside of a window at Lakeside Lounge Sunday night (top picture). Stripping Alabama Shakes from the familiar sold-out, blogged show experience gives their already organic sound a rough edge. It was difficult to tell if lead singer, Brittany Howard was either perspiring around her eyes or tearing in the small bar on Saturday. Quite literally, I watched from the outside looking in, witnessing a small snippet of a time when that A&R was sitting in the back of the room with a smirk on his face. When music spoke, and you listened intently to muffled, but window-rattling, soul-rattling vocals. On a cold Saturday night, I was reminded why the music business never really changed at all.

She’s been described as Janis Joplin or even Amy Winehouse. You can feel her Alabama roots bleeding through her lyrics. However, it wouldn’t be fair to put the spotlight just on her because Heath Fogg, Zac Cockrell, and Steve Johnson create an energy usually reserved by their late, great soulful predecessors.

Red Light Management, kudos to you.

Iconic

Who is it?

Who can fill the role? Who really matters?

It is a question of both the quality of artistry and the lasting impression. It is the channeling of the universal language of music.

This is not a business model or a forecast based on the industry trends.

This is not filling the social media space.

This is the iconic musician. The unexplainable, natural attraction to an artist without any enhancement.

The iconic artist once had the power to alter societal ideologies and create their own circle.

Within this circle was a massive, multifaceted creative effort, just because.

No particular motive, it was a simple organic creative relationship.

Who is it?

Who can fil the role, who really matters?

Mr. Frank Ocean.

About 6 months ago I furiously made a list of things that I wanted to do. At the time, I was feeling crappy about life and wanted change. After compiling this list of wants I tried my best to attempt each “task”. I quickly found out that I was too scared to do almost everything that I wrote down on that list. In the back of my mind I had already convinced myself that I wasn’t able to. After uncovering & destroying the obstacles I had built for myself, I decided to try again. It first started by disconnecting from people that did not help my creativity, I ended up quitting a good stable job that didn’t make me happy and finally I decided to move to LA to pursue music 100%. One by one I am finally checking things off that list. I’m stepping out of my comfort zone and am simply trying. It’s such a silly little thing-I think most of us don’t actually try to do what we really want. For me, trying means starting over. I feel like I am finally turning into that fearless person I have always dreamed of being. Not to be all preacher-ish…i still have no idea what the heck I am doing…I just felt like telling you this stuff because it makes me happy :)

After a long journey throughout Ohio, New York, and soon to be the UK, I feel myself getting closer and closer to the core of my passion. I haven’t been home for almost an entire year, severing some relationships and sustaining old news. Family stays true and genuine friendships only grow with time. The heart of my dreams is truly a combination of the strong attraction I have to music and the social implications of its influence. It is the only pure universal communication we have left as a society and I feel as though it is my duty to support, promote, and thrive from it. It is a vocation as it is a career as it is a lifestyle. For the past two years, it would take me longer than 2 years to rehash the incredible opportunities I’ve had. I’m forever thankful and I wish to remain forever humbled. I know I’ve tapped into something.
